Categories & descriptions of the most common guitar effects

Effects have been instrumental in helping guitarists add depth & individuality to their basic guitar tone for over 70 years. The 50's & 60's ushered in more availability. Today, we are surrounded with seemingly limitless choices when it comes to effects. Most of these effects are provided in a stompbox, multi effects pedal, onboard (within amp), or rack format.

To simplify things, most guitar effects can be lumped into four main categories: 1) Dynamics, 2) Reverb-Delay, 3) Pitch Modulation, and 4) Distortion.
